Ask and listen. Thoughts of your loved one about suicide may frighten and worry you, but even one sincere conversation can reduce the risk of suicide. Remember, you don’t have to be an expert to ask about how someone is feeling.
There is a common belief that it is dangerous to ask directly about suicide because it may encourage the person to kill themselves. This is a myth.
If a person is not thinking about suicide, asking them directly about it will certainly not encourage them to commit suicide. For a person who is already thinking about suicide, a direct and open question will give them space to talk about their deeply troubling experiences, even if they are difficult to discuss. Often, such people hide their thoughts and experiences so as not to scare those around them and burden them with responsibility. By talking openly, they may feel the relief and understanding they need so desperately.
